Since Tuesday, the NSA has been unable to collect in bulk metadata on every American's cell phone calls - information regarding who called whom when. The new USA Freedom Act signed by President Obama on Tuesday bans bulk collection of U.S. cellphone and Internet data by the National Security Agency. Section 215 of the new law requires telecoms to retain the call data, and not the NSA. The NSA can obtain information about targeted individuals with permission from a federal court.
The law also requires the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to declassify its most important decisions. The new law does not address the NSA collection of foreign Internet data from U.S. sources.
